I was reading Beth Ferrier’s Blog and read about how she thought of herself as not having ‘all the girly genes’. I know where she is coming from. I have never been into the makeup and dress-up thing; I am comfy in a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and going barefoot. I don’t even care for jewelry. But give me a needle and some pieces of material and I am in heaven - or just this side of it. Now my friend Barbara is just the opposite. She likes dresses, shoes, makeup, jewelry ... all the things I’m NOT into ... and she does it well. I am amazed by her all the time, going through what she continues to go through without a complaint whatsoever. And her faith does not waver in the midst of all she goes through. She really inspires everyone that knows her.
I had a visit from a friend from Iowa this week and we were talking about old sewing machines. I remember the first quilt I ever made. My grandmother is the one that really got me interested in making quilts, and the first top I ever made was pieced on her old treadle machine and the design was a simple one called ‘Thousand Pyramids” and was easy to make on the machine. She hand-quilted it and gave it to me when I got married. The second quilt was a ‘8-point star’ and the diamonds were all cut from newspaper, and scraps of material left over from other projects were hand-stitched onto the newspaper, and then the newspaper was removed after the top was put together. By then I was hooked on quilting! I will always cherish the memories of sewing the tops together with her. I still like to do quilting by hand. I have her treadle machine now, but only use the newer machines. But I wouldn’t trade her machine for anything.
My girlfriend was saying how she had her mom’s machine and now her daughter has it. I think it is nice to pass on things like that from generation to generation. I have my mom’s first computerized machine. It is almost an antique as far as computerized machines go, but still sews good and I use it a lot.
My group at the nursing home are coming along great with their quilt blocks. They really look forward to the times we get together. One of the ladies told me this past week that she loved piecing the blocks together because she felt as she was doing something productive with her time there and not just watching TV or sitting around doing nothing. I am so blessed to be involved with those ladies and the one gentleman in our little group. I really like being involved with anything ‘quilty’ and even though I have other things that require my attention, quilting is my getaway. When I can combine the two, I am a happy woman.
I have been working on a quilt for another sister. It is a Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern and the center hexagons have been signed by family members. But I saw a picture of another version that is really pretty and I think I am going to do that to this one. Instead of hexagons around the ‘flowers’, there were diamonds. It is called ‘Grandmother’s Flower Garden Diamonds.’ I like that it is different and also a beautiful quilt top.
Well, gotta go again. I leave you with this thought:
I don't make mistakes, I make design changes; some work, some don't!
